A fault code is not permission to continue operating

Operating status depends on the exact model, controller, symptoms, load and manufacturer procedure. A page may summarize a recorded operator action, but the exact manual and workplace procedure take priority.

Stop and escalate

Stop operation, keep people clear and follow the site emergency or energy-control procedure when a code is accompanied by smoke, fire, sparks, a burning smell, fuel or refrigerant leakage, abnormal pressure, uncontrolled movement, structural damage, injury or repeated electrical trips.

Owner-safe scope

Owner-safe activity is normally limited to recording the code, identifying the machine, observing external conditions, checking unobstructed owner-accessible items and performing a reset only when the exact manual permits it. Repeated resets can hide an active condition and are not a diagnosis.

Qualified-service boundary

Panels, live measurements, high voltage, stored energy, batteries, fuel, gas, refrigerant, pressure vessels, hydraulic systems, guarded moving machinery and safety interlocks require the training, tools and isolation procedures specified for the equipment and workplace.

Information to record

• exact displayed code and any status colour;
• brand, model, serial range and controller;
• operating mode, load and ambient conditions;
• what happened immediately before the alarm;
• unusual smell, sound, heat, leakage or motion;
• whether the alarm returned after a manufacturer-permitted action.

This information helps a qualified technician choose the correct manual and avoid an unsafe or irrelevant procedure.
